This is a pretty simple piece of hardware. It consists of three parts: a round bar, and two hangers that bolt into studs. I love what it does for your cargo box. I have a small car and use my cargo box for various trips. But having the hanger allows me to have it off my car most of the time and have it securely stored out of the way. It saves me gas to not always be driving around with my cargo box.
I had the same problem in that the Yakima screws broke off while ratcheting them into the studs. I went to a local hardware store with a good selection of hardware and found virtually identical replacement screws. Only thing is they weren’t painted black. So I put some touch up black paint on the heads of the bolts and no one can tell the difference.
I suppose you might be able to make your own out of a yakima bar and parts from the hardware store but if you’re time is worth money, its just easier to buy this little kit. You do need to know how to find studs ( usually 16inches on center), pre-drill pilot holes, and use a ratchet set to screw in the bolts though.
Even with all that I am very pleased with this product.
